The Consciousness Index C(S) tracks directionality — how well a system transfers friction from humans to machines.

C(S) = 1 means perfect alignment: humans experience no unnecessary friction; all residual complexity is computational.

C(S) = 0 means total unconsciousness: humans carry the entire temporal burden.
